I will preface this review by stating that ChaseKassidy’s LoveGun is not the kind of music I usually listen to. I did enjoy the album, but I feel that what sets this album apart is something that can also work against it. It was easily discernible on my first listen that this album is a story. An entire story from beginning to end, when listening to it in order. This is confirmed by ChaseKassidy on his bandcamp page. The story is of a relationship from the beginning to the end of that relationship. This linear storytelling through the tracks is not something I have ever heard before and it is beautiful. The hip hop vibe is present but in a very subdued way. The rapping is seamless and the style is very original.

Listening to LoveGun was an experience and I appreciate the hard work and production that went into it. A slight drawback is that I feel that the vocals need to be a little louder, sometimes they can be hard to make out over the music, which makes the track hard to listen to, this is more noticeable on the first four tracks. I don’t believe I will find the opportunity to listen to it again, as it is not the sort of album that you can pick a track from and just listen.

The vocals flowed well and worked well within each track. There was a laid-back, easy vibe that resonated and built to the crescendo of the album. My slight criticisms, are hopefully viewed as constructive. The first four tracks are similar, almost to the point that they are indistinguishable from each other. They are of a fantastic quality, and I do understand that they need to be listened to in order. There has to be a cohesion, but I don’t quite understand why they have to be so similar.

My favorite track, is ‘Its Over’. The track is a little more uptempo and it sets itself apart from the others in a wonderful way. The beat is fabulous and the instrumentals are the best on the album. ‘Tonight’ is also a stand out track and the flow of the lyrics are superb, as they work great with some awesome backing vocals. LoveGun is well worth a listen and is available now.
