ILoveMakonnen, the stage name of Makonnen Sheran, is a popular hip-hop artist based out of the current rap mecca, Atlanta. However he is originally from Los Angeles, CA. Recently, on January 20th to be exact, he hit twitter to reveal that he has come out as gay.  The three separate tweets went as follows: Someone said to me next time they see me, they was gonna fuck me, I said next time I see me, I’m gonna love me up…As a fashion icon, I can’t tell u about everybody else’s closet, I can only tell u about mine, and it’s time I’ve come out…And since y’all love breaking news, here’s some old news to break, I’m gay. And now I’ve told u about my life, maybe u can go life yours.”

In coming out in this manner, ILoveMakonnen chose to be understated, reporting it as old news. He later followed up with the quip ‘thank you for letting me be myself,’ perhaps a reference to popular funk group Sly and The Family Stone’s hit song. Old news or not, the hip-hop and rap communities alike have seized on this new information, lauding his courage and the information has certainly built intrigue for his brand. Of course, we at rainbowexoticmusic.com are proud of ILoveMakonnen and acknowledge how hard it can be to come out, especially when you are in the spotlight of the music scene, and in the genre of rap and hip-hop, a typically hetero-masculine culture that he is now bending.

But of course, ILoveMakonnen has been famous since long before he outed himself on twitter. He first broke onto the music scene with his track ‘Tuesday’, still our favorite weeknight pregame drinking and partying song. This song, featuring rap’s prince in waiting Drake, is undoubtedly his most popular.

However, his solo work is worth checking out. The song ‘Trust Me Danny’ features his usual tonal vocals over typical trap beats.

So too does his song ‘Sellin’, a track truly representative of the Atlanta rap scene from which he comes.

If these songs complete his top three, surely ‘Look At Wrist’ is his number four. This slow, trippy track will get you lost in the synthesized beats and ILoveMakonnen’s typical, range-less vocals that somehow come so pleasing through out headphones.

To round out your image of IloveMakonnen, be sure to check out his track ‘Forever’ featuring Santigold and 1st. This song made it onto radio waves thanks to its pop vibes, complete with autotune and Makonnen showing off his singing voice, which is tantalizingly different.

[…] ILoveMakonnen wasn’t the only one to shake up the hip-hop community by coming out as gay last week. We all no Chance the Rapper, the artist made popular by his lyrical talent and refusal to be signed to any label. As it turns out, his brother Taylor Bennett is also musically inclined, and talented in a different but equally intriguing way. Taylor Bennett came out as bisexual last week, further proof that the once hetero-masculine dominated world of hip-hop and rap is evolving to a more progressive genre. Of course, rainbowexoticmusic.com is fully in support of this movement and… Read more »
