State by OVERWERK is pure brilliance, and the first full length album from the artist. The field of EDM has been slightly stale of late, a lot of tracks blend into one another and nothing has really excited me for what seems like ages. OVERWERK has shook me up. It begins from the first track ‘Funeral’ which is a wonderful electronic salute to the death march music featured in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. It has a air of macabre whimsy that just resonates through the track.
The track ‘Moments’ features vocals by Black Atlass, an incredibly talented performer. The vocals and the music compliment each other perfectly and it showcases what a wonder it is when electronic music is enhanced by the right vocals.
The album includes a 2 minute track entitled ‘Reflect’, described as an interlude. A very apt name as it uses/remixes a sample of OVERWERK’s earlier hit ‘Matter’. ‘Reflect’ hits you with a wave of nostalgia, and is yet another example of the growth of this artist. The track is very stripped down and is a more melodic form, but it is done in a genius way so it doesn’t come across as basic.
‘Calling’ is well up there with my favorite tracks of this album. Here with have Nick Nikon providing the vocals. Yet again, the vocals enhance the music and vice versa. The beat on this track is the very definition of infectious, and I have listened to it several times and I’ve never got through it without moving my body.
State features a number of tracks that have vocal performances, and each and every one is superb. None of them feel superfluous or just added to make up the numbers, which is something that is rampant in the music industry. There isn’t any track on this album that feels like a filler.
Another interlude track is ‘Hindsight’. It is only a minute long but it a strong, melodic foray into electronica with an intense almost Victorian vibe. I would love a 4 minute version of this, I’m not going to lie.
State is a lesson in EDM mastery, and is pure joy to listen to. Each and every track has been well crafted, and well produced which has resulted in one of the strongest albums I have ever listened to. It is available now, so what are you waiting for?
